Happy Fall, Valley View! 

What a great week we had at Valley View! One of the highlights was our first Valley View assembly of the year, where our students completed Ollie’s Superhero Training Academy. They learned what it means to be a Valley View Superhero by being safe, responsible, and a good friend. It was so much fun seeing our students participate, show their school spirit, and practice their superhero powers!

As the weather begins to change, please remember to dress your child in layers. Fall mornings can be chilly, while afternoons can warm up, and we want everyone to be comfortable throughout the school day.

Also, be on the lookout for Picture Day forms coming home soon. Our Picture Day is Monday, October 5.

Please make sure to email vvattendance@portlandct.us if your child will be absent or if there is a change of dismissal/transportation plans. Please do NOT send messages directly through ParentSquare to the office. The email should include your child’s first and last name, name of teacher, reason for absence, and the date or dates of absence. Please make sure the email is sent the night before or the morning of the absence to ensure the office staff, nurse and teacher are aware. Please make sure the office is aware of all transportation updates regarding your child.

Busing in the Portland Public Schools is provided by M&J Bus. Bus route lists are posted here: https://www.portlandctschools.org/bus-routes The bus lists identify each stop's pick-up/drop-off time and location.

 

On a typical day, when all drivers are present and there are no abnormal road conditions, we expect that the routes will pick up and drop off students at times identified on the bus lists, give or take ten minutes.

 

If parents/guardians need real-time information about the whereabouts of a bus, please call M&J Bus at (860) 342-2217. The dispatcher at M&J Bus has real-time access via radio to all bus drivers.

Your child’s school works with Community Health Center, Inc. School Based Health Center program to provide health services (behavioral/mental health) services to your child during the school day. This means they won’t miss as much class and you don’t need to miss work to support their health care needs.

Happy Friday!

We are full into the school year now and we are seeing some absences due to illness.We have not had anything specific and nothing that is in one classroom or grade.  As students get used to “new” germs we sometimes see a rise in sniffles and coughs.  Students can be in school with cold symptoms but please monitor your child as you know them best. 

 

As you may know we have had a couple cases of lice reported this week.  I sent out a Parent Square message earlier this week.I am happy to report no new cases have been reported.  No significant illness to report either. 

 

Please consider sending in a change of clothes for your child to keep in their locker.I am very limited in what I have to offer if someone has an accident or gets wet or muddy on the playground.  A full change of clothes is helpful.

During library classes, we have been learning about how our library works and how to take good care of library books when they are reading them at home.  Please help your child to take good care of the books and return them on time.  They do have the option to renew them once.  

Our first birthday book club was a success! We have 15 beautiful new books for the Valley View Library!  Thank you to all who participated and we look forward to our next birthday book club for students who have birthdays in November and December.  More details to follow!  Here are some pictures from our September/October celebration.  If your child missed it and would like to participate in our next one, please send me an email.

Finally, I am going to share our library stats as often as possible. See the picture below.  We are still missing five books from last year so if you find them, please send them in.

Kindergarten artists are learning how simple shapes can be combined to make new shapes. This week they used their growing cutting and gluing skills to create these fun “Shape People”, adding color and details along the way.

Breakfast is FREE for all students. If your child should be eating breakfast at school, let them know they need to come see me in the Cafeteria before they head to their classrooms. 

Secondly, milk is included in any complete meal. However, if your students wish to purchase milk to have with their lunches from home it costs 60 cents. In addition to purchasing milk your children will have the opportunity to buy other items throughout the school year. Thursdays will be our designated "Snack Day" In order to purchase milk or snack, students must have a positive balance in their student lunch account or cash can be sent in to school.
